What Is a Dental Emergency?

There are a number of dental issues that are commonly considered to be emergencies:

  • Any kind of severe tooth pain, such as a toothache or a tooth that has been damaged by an oral injury is an emergency.
  • Tooth pain indicates that something is wrong with your oral health, such as an infection or a fracture, and these oral issues should be addressed as soon as possible.
  • Knocked-out teeth are also a common dental emergency, and they are one of the most serious, time-sensitive oral injuries. Your tooth must be replaced within 1-2 hours in order to save it.
  • Pulled-out or loose dental work (such as a crown or filling) is also considered an emergency since this can lead to further complications, like a tooth infection.
  • If you’re in pain and don’t know how to treat the issue on your own, you’re having a dental emergency. Come to our office right away for a same-day emergency appointment!

What Should I Do If I Have a Knocked-Out Tooth?

  • Call SmileSpot right away to let us know about your condition. It’s important to get treatment within 1-2 hours in order to save your tooth.
  • Next, recover your tooth and rinse it with warm water, if necessary.
  • Then, put your tooth back into its socket or in a small container of cold milk to keep it moist. This keeps your tooth alive until we can reimplant it into your gums.
  • Do not waste time trying to treat pain or bleeding on your own. Come into our office as soon as you possibly can. The sooner we can replace, splint, and stabilize your tooth, the more likely it is that we can save it.
